Caring for Creation

All Faiths for Peace, Justice and Sustainability

Oxford Town Hall 29th March 10.30 – 5pm

Michael Meacher MP to speak at Oxford Town Hall

Campaigning Groups and Faiths Unite to Examine Threats to Planet

Welcome from Lord Mayor Chaired by Ellen Teague

Four campaigning groups concerned with peace and justice issues have united to organise a day-conference and festival “Caring for Creation”. This will make links between peace, justice and sustainability. Dr Edward Echlin, keynote speaker, an ecological theologian, says “I have a special interest in relating peace, justice and the earth community which we all share, and with which we are fellow creatures.” The other main speakers are Michael Meacher MP, Mark Dowd, the newly appointed Campaign Strategist of Operation Noah, a former Dominican Friar and prize-winning documentary maker, and Carol Naughton, past chair of CND, from Come Clean, the WMD Awareness Programme, a project initiated by Professor Sir Joseph Rotblat. An Interfaith panel will comment and add their own faith-based insights.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor John Tanner, a Mayor for Peace, will welcome the participants. This will be followed by a procession of religious symbols from different faiths. These will be displayed throughout the day together with an exhibition of quotations from sacred writings on the theme of the conference.

There will be a number of workshops to show participants that they can make a difference. These include Pat Gaffney from Pax Christi on justice for Palestine, Ruth Jarman from Christian Ecology Link (CEL) on Living Hopefully on a Planet under Threat, Peace Tax Seven, and Oxford CND showing the new “Nukewatch” film. (Nukewatch tracks the movements of convoys carrying nuclear warheads around the country).

Different organisations and pressure groups are bringing stalls, including Peace Education, CEL, and several Oxford-based concerns. Music from different cultures will include songs from the free West Papua Group. There will be a Peace Tent and multi-cultural crafts.

Local schools have been invited to submit art-work, essays and poetry on their vision for the future to form an exhibition in the Town Hall on the day. It is intended that selections from these to be published in a booklet afterwards.

All are welcome, and admission will be free.
